Creative Skills, Confidence & Progression Programme

Alton Fashion Futures CIC uses fashion, pattern-making, and creative learning to build confidence, wellbeing, practical skills, and progression opportunities for young people and adults across Enfield.

Our Creative Skills, Confidence & Progression Programme is a community-based initiative providing free fashion design, pattern-making, and garment construction workshops in accessible local venues. The programme supports individuals facing barriers to education, training, or employment, as well as young people referred through schools, youth organisations, and community partners.

Workshops are delivered in libraries, community settings, schools, and creative studio environments, providing participants with a safe and supportive space to learn, create, and develop new skills.

Each programme runs as a structured 6–10-week course, typically engaging between 8–14 participants per group. Through practical, step-by-step activities, participants learn fashion illustration, creative pattern-making, garment construction, and design development while strengthening confidence, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

The programme is designed not only to develop creative and technical abilities but also to support personal growth, wellbeing, and future progression into further learning, work experience, volunteering, and employment pathways within the creative industries.

Building on a series of successful community pilot workshops, participants have reported increased confidence, improved creative skills, and a strong desire to continue their learning journey. As the programme grows, Alton Fashion Futures CIC continues to develop partnerships with schools, youth organisations, and community groups to expand access to creative opportunities across the borough.

The Local Challenge

While London is a global hub for the creative arts and the world's fashion capital, access to these thriving industries is unevenly distributed. Enfield is currently ranked within the worst 13% of local authority districts in England for deprivation, with over 55% of children and young people living in income-deprived households. Furthermore, Enfield faces the 3rd-highest level of education and skills deprivation among London boroughs.
With youth unemployment rates in London soaring to record highs of 24.6%, young people in Enfield—particularly those facing educational exclusion—are at a stark systemic disadvantage. Without accessible, practical avenues to develop technical skills and commercial experience, many local youths remain locked out of sustainable and fulfilling careers.

Our Solution

Alton Fashion Futures CIC was founded to bridge this exact opportunity gap. We do not just teach sewing; we use fashion design and garment construction as a vehicle for social mobility, confidence-building, and professional development. By introducing technical masterclasses in a borough heavily impacted by educational deprivation, we give young people tangible, creative skills that open new pathways into further training, mentorship, and employment.

Proven Impact: The Power of Community Collaboration

We believe that real change requires a collective local effort. Rather than operating in a vacuum, we design our programs to uplift and connect with the wider Enfield ecosystem.
A perfect example of this is our recent Community Fashion and Beauty Showcase Event, where the tangible results of our curriculum were put on full display.

Youth Empowerment: Local students took centre stage in a fashion show, modelling final pieces- custom-made skirts- that they had designed, patterned, and constructed entirely from scratch.
Cross-Sector Collaboration: The event served as a hub to highlight what other local independent businesses are doing to make Enfield a better, more vibrant place to live and work.
Accessible Infrastructure: By partnering with our local library to host the exhibition, we ensured that the achievements of Enfield’s young people were visible, celebrated, and accessible to the entire community.

Our Impact So Far

Through artist-led pattern-making and fashion design programmes, we create opportunities for young people to explore creativity using approaches informed by professional fashion education and industry practice. Led by a highly qualified Fashion Educator with over 34 years' work experience in the fashion industry. Delivering the official University of the Arts London (UAL) curriculum in Further Education (FE), we bridge the gap between community interest and industry standards. By embedding these rigorous academic frameworks into our community programs, we provide underrepresented youth and adults with the portfolio-building skills and technical precision needed to access high-value creative careers.

By treating our participants with the same high expectations as accredited academic students, we create extraordinary pathways to higher education and economic independence.

Elite Placement: Among my advanced learners in FE, 2 out of 3 higher education applicants have been accepted to Central Saint Martins (CSM), globally recognised as a premier destination for fashion education. Our remaining applicants have successfully progressed to Middlesex University London, helping to keep local talent thriving right here in North London.
Industry Readiness: Multiple program alumni have transitioned from absolute beginners to fully autonomous creators. They are now capable of designing, pattern-making, and manufacturing their own custom clothing lines independently within the fashion sector.
